Employer have always demanded a clear separation between work and personal affairs,

so why are they now instigating forced monitoring of both?

Could you imagine a job interview during which your interviewer asks you for your Facebook password? Well folks,it’s happening and you should know what to do when it happens to you.

It appears potential employers are stretching their responsibilities just a little too far, if blatant personal invasiveness is a little too far. I know personally I wouldn’t think twice before refusing. How would you react?

So I recently was asked to give a speech

to an audience of around 12 people. It could be on any topic, as long as it was informative, objective and at least slightly interesting. So what did I choose? Read Here.

No, I hate it when people do that. When they try so hard to be hyperlinky and vague. It’s like saying ”I want to be annoying, but you have to let me”… and then if we click the link, we’ve let them. If we leave it unclicked, it’s still annoying.Minus one tumblr follower.

So basically I talked about how social networking has affected our news delivery, distribution, and our societal views on what matters to us, and what we feel is important. Now we’re controlling so much more of the news than we’ve ever

  1. Anticipated
  2. Wanted
  3. Realized

And these things are all very new ideas. Yes they’re fascinating, yes they’re exciting, but yes, they’re also very powerful. I hate spiderman, but that wholegreat power > great responsibilitything is pretty true. I’m not sure where we’re going with this shift, but I hope it’s a positive direction. As much as the people should have a say in the issues that matter to them, it’s also a harsh reality to consider, the one that ensues a lifestyle revolving around soft journalism. No, the Kardashians don’t actually matter, and funnily enough, Jersey Shore doesn’t actually affect a much further radius.

So I leave this speech with you guys to read (hyperlinked above), but I also leave you with this question (to which answers are always appreciated and valued!): Do we, as members of the public, havetoo muchcontrol over the news? Is our ability to incite such a shift in what is filtered as ‘important’ a positive power? Can we handle it effectively?

The Social Shift: The rise in Social Networking, Soft Journalism and Questionable ‘Journalism’ efforts.

Taken From Shifting:

Though many would believe that social networking is merely a virtual means of connecting with friends, it has shaped both our digital and physical societies exponentially, by dictating the way we receive and distribute news, destroying and consequently reshaping our journalistic methods and values, composing the majority of internet and digital media trends, and shifting what we perceive to be, and how we perceive, current affairs.

Social networking has had many implications on our physical and digital societies, some of which are helpful to journalists and the process of journalism, but they have also had many negative impacts on journalism as we used to know it.
